Here is a list of the largest companies by market cap today based on their publicly traded equity as of October 12, 2020 and listed for trading in the U.S.

On this list there are five NASDAQ listed stocks and four NYSE listed stocks and one company that trades on the OTC market because it is a Chinese company not listed on an American exchange. Eight of these companies are U.S. based and two are Chinese.

These are the winning companies and stocks of the past 30 years in the market and have been the primary contributors to the price appreciation of the most popular stock market indexes.

#1. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) — $2.096 Trillion
#2. Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) — $1.714 Trillion
#3. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) — $1.665 Trillion
#4. Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG/GOOGL) — $1.061 Billion
#5 Alibaba (NYSE:BABA) — $828.97 Billion
#6. Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) — $778 Billion
#7. Berkshire Hathaway Inc (NYSE:BRK.B) — $517 Billion

There are two primary paths to make money in the stock market. One is to find the companies that have the potential for growth and market dominance, then buy them and ride their trends to the upside either through trend trading or investing. The other is to buy and hold a stock market index for ten or more years or to trend trade an index to the upside to create big wins or small losses over the long term. If you invest in or trade a stock market index it will rise as the index rotates the biggest winning stocks in and rotates the losing stocks out based on its own system of component selection over the long term.
